Teacher Education

We have been at the forefront of teacher education for over 100 years and is the largest School of Education in WA. Professional practice is central to all ECU teacher education courses, making ECU graduates job ready and preferred by many employers.

A focus on current research, innovative practices and authentic contexts are embedded in our Teacher Education disciplines.

Coursework programs offered in this study area offer research-informed advanced professional knowledge and practice, whilst research programs offer the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research that will inform policy development and teacher professional learning.

Absolute flexibility means I can teach, and learn at the same time

It started with a BA, then a Grad Dip in teaching and now I'm into my Masters. I'm not stopping until I've got my PhD!

I never imagined I could achieve so much. I've taken so much out of my time at ECU. I've learned to be a critical thinker, developed my research skills, and been able to apply my knowledge to my career.

I can honestly say if it wasn't for the support and flexibility offered to me by ECU, I wouldn't have reached this point.

Engaging the community

We are actively involved in co-ordinating community events aimed at bringing awareness to school children in areas such as science, environmental education and maths.

All community programs are embedded within the School of Education course curriculum to provide our pre-service teachers with an applied, hands-on experience throughout their course of study. For example:

  • Science for Kids Day (SKIDS)
School children from across the metropolitan area come on campus for the day to experience hands-on science activities with experienced Science teachers and ECU pre-service teachers.
  • MAD Maths Day
It's all about showing how fun maths can really be. School children from around Perth attend a series of activities hosted by Maths specialists. ECU teaching students are always involved and are happy to lend helping hands.
  • Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated internationally and ECU is believed to be the only WA organisation to hold a celebration centred around environmental educational issues. School children come on campus to participate in fun activities that are sponsored and supported by a number of environmental industry partners.

Centre for schooling and Learning technologies (csaLt)

CSaLT continues to develop valued research and innovative products as part of its mission to support activities that improve schooling in Western Australia and maximize the effective use of ICT to support teaching and learning in schools.

The centre recently received a three-year ARC Linkage grant valued at over $500,000 which will see the centre working with the Curriculum Council to investigate the use of digital technologies and new psychometric measures to assess student practical performance in the Applied Information Technology, Engineering Studies, Physical Education Studies, and Italian courses of study at the senior secondary level.

Improving mathematical performance with Literacy

The Fogarty Learning Centre is devoted to improving the teaching of literacy and numeracy in schools.

As part of that work, a collaborative research project between the Association of Independent Schools Western Australia (AISWA) and ECU will assist teachers to improve the numeracy of their students by helping them to identify and rectify language difficulties, especially those related to reading and comprehending mathematical text.

The research findings will have direct impact on the professional development of pre-service and experienced teachers who teach mathematics across all English speaking countries in the world. If students' engagements with language, in all its forms, become more fruitful then their comprehension should become richer and their mathematical cognition should be enhanced.
