ECU graduate Matthew Gallen chose to complete his Masters of Education off-campus which meant he didn't need to physically attend an ECU campus.
Studying off-campus enabled Matthew to remain in the remote Aboriginal community of Kiwirrkurra where he was needed most.
"Studying at ECU has been challenging, both intellectually and logistically, but the last two years have produced some of the most rewarding learning I have ever engaged in."
Matthew Gallen
Master of Education
Off-campus study is a mode of delivery which is predominately delivered online or supported by supplementary material that is posted to you.
Courses are available in these modes as an option to students, who for reasons such as distance, domestic responsibilities, work commitments or disability would prefer to study off-campus.
ECU provides a range of resources for off-campus study including print-based materials, online web access and CD ROMs.
In order to study coures and units off-campus, you will need to have access to a computer with an Internet connection and a CD/DVD ROM drive.
Courses may be delivered wholly off-campus or partly on-campus, depending on the units selected and their availability. The following is a list of courses, or specific majors of courses that can be studied fully Off-campus.
You enrol in your units using the online student information management system (known as SIMO) at simo.ecu.edu.au. Off-campus units will have their campus listed as ‘OFF’.
MyECU
As a student enrolled in one or more Off-campus
unit offerings, your learning materials will
predominantly be delivered online via the learning
management system, MyECU, also known as
Blackboard. Some units will be delivered completely
Off-campus while some may be supported by
supplementary material that will be posted to you.
A couple of weeks before the commencement of semester, you can log into MyECU, by visiting ecu.edu.au/myecu. Once logged in, all the Off-campus units into which you are enrolled will appear as links. Click on them and you will be taken to the online unit site. This is where you will be interacting with your tutors and where you will receive unit content as well as instructions from your lecturer on how to complete the unit. Any supplementary materials required for your unit will be mailed to you by the Off-campus support team prior to the start of the teaching period.
Books
You may visit an ECU Bookshop on campus to
purchase your text books, or order them online at
ecu.edu.au/fas/bookshop/.
Student email
Make time each week to keep up with your
reading, assessments and news about your unit.
You can do this by checking your student email
and logging into MyECU every few days.
Research Online
You can conduct research online through the
library databases and online catalogue at
ecu.edu.au/library. If you live beyond a
commutable distance from a campus, the library
can provide copies of journal articles and books
to you upon request.
Assignments
Assignments for Off-campus units must be
submitted directly to your tutor or lecturer.
If you are completing a unit on MyECU,
please follow the instructions provided in
your MyECU unit site or contact your tutor
or lecturer for specific instructions.
Exams
If your unit has an examination, in the last few
weeks of semester you can log into SIMO and
verify your exam dates and times. If you live
beyond a commutable distance from the campus
a local examination centre will be nominated for
you or you may be asked to nominate one.
At the end of semester, you can access your marks from SIMO as well as enrol in more units.
Students at ECU can access a variety of student support services to help with study and aspects of
