Parents of Prospective Students
The biggest question we get asked by parents of prospective students is "How can I help my son/daughter with their Course Selection?"
How can you help them to select the right course?
We find the best recipe for success to finding a course and/or career that your son/daughter will enjoy and find success in, is to encourage them to consider the following:
- What are their strengths?
- What do they enjoy?
- What are their interests outside of school?
- What is theirpersonality type (i.e. social, realistic, investigative, artistic, enterprising or conventional)?
The Undergraduate Course Guide and the Course Planner are good tools to assist in identifying the types of courses and careers which might suit their interests, abilities and strengths. You can download them from our publications page.
What subjects should they study in Year 11 and 12?
You'll need to ensure that your son/daughter is studying units which meet the minimum admission requirements into ECU plus any subject(s) required as prerequisites for the course they want to pursue.
We suggest that you explore alternative entry pathways such as Portfolio Entry, University Preparation Courses, entry via qualifications gained at TAFE or other Registered Training Organisations.
Depending on your son or daughter's age, they may also be eligible to apply for entry as a non school leaver. This may involve sitting the STAT test or undertaking a mature-age TEE at Tuart or Canning College
This will help allay any anxieties about "worst case" scenarios.
How else can you help?
